Compact. Lightweight. The ease of manipulating light to capture the images you’ve always wanted. Enjoy these features and more with the new Speedlight SB-500, the high-performance LED flash that’s perfect for your DX-format or FX-format DSLR. Offering brilliant illumination for close-ups and movie-recording in the dark, the Speedlight SB-500 is your indispensible companion to capture that flash of inspiration, no matter where you are.

Weighing only 273g with batteries, the Speedlight SB-500 is surprisingly portable with dimensions of just 67mm (width) x 114.5mm (height) x 70.8mm (diameter). Its flash head tilts up to 90° and rotates 180° left and right, reducing your need for unnatural shading with additional accessories. Simply slot in 2 R7/AA-size batteries and start snapping away with ease.

Small in size but big on performance, the SB-500 offers best-in-class brightness for flashlights that use 2 AA-sized batteries. Select from three output levels of LED light – low, mid, and high – and experience the SB-500 difference, even in dark interiors or at close distances. Its colour temperature is closer to natural sunlight, so you can use it as an auxiliary light even when you’re outdoors. With a coverage of 24mm*1 lens angle of view in FX-format DSLRs, it provides even lighting to reproduce colour as you see it. The color information communication function of the Speedlight also works seamlessly to automatically set the most appropriate white balance when paired with compatible cameras such as the D810 and D750.

The Speedlight SB-500 was built with easy-to-understand buttons and controls for seamless operation. Selected settings can also be accessed on a compatible camera’s LCD monitor. With a Speedlight that’s so simple to use, you now have more time to enjoy creating beautiful images.

Let the Speedlight SB-500 bring out the best in your images. Supporting 6 features of Creative Lighting Systems, the Speedlight SB-500 allows you to leverage on i-TTL Mode, Advanced Wireless Lighting, Modeling Flash, FV Lock, Flash Colour Information Communication, and Auto FP High-speed Sync to capture scenes as you envision them. The Speedlight SB-500 also operates in 2 modes: Remote, where the camera’s built-in flash acts as the master light and the Speedlight SB-500 as a secondary light; or Commander*2, where you can use the Speedlight SB-500 as the master flash with a compatible camera.

Brighten up your HD video

High-performance LED for video recording

The SB-500 AF Speedlight is also a versatile video light especially well suited for recording interviews up close. It has a built-in high-intensity LED light (approx. 100 lux) that provides steady, uniform daylight-balanced illumination. It can be used at three output levels—quarter, half or full power—making it practical for low-light video shooting and close up still photography. And when used with the D810 or D750, the SB-500 AF Speedlight communicates LED color information (along with that of the flash) to the camera for optimal white balance.

Compact and lightweight, easy-to-use Speedlight

The SB-500 is a high-performance LED flash for both DX-format and FX-format DSLR users who are looking to achieve enhanced imaging expression.

Guide number of 24/78.7 (m/ft, ISO 100)

The SB-500 provides a guide number of 24/78.7 (m/ft, ISO 100) and coverage for the angle of view of a 24 mm lens (FX format) or 16 mm lens (DX format), extending the range of your creative expression.

Bounce the light for beautiful indoor portraits

The flash head of the SB-500 tilts up to 90° and rotates horizontally 180° to the left and right, reducing unnatural shading.

High-performance LED light is incorporated that is effective for movie recording and close-up still shooting

The LED light provides output of approx. 100 lx, the highest-class brightness among products using two AA-size batteries. Illumination with a surface light source utilizing a diffuser covers the angle of view of a 24 mm lens (FX format). Output level is selectable in three steps (Low, Mid, High). As the color temperature is 5400K, that is close to sunlight, it can be naturally used as an auxiliary light during outdoor shooting. The color information communication function automatically sets the most appropriate white balance when attached to the D810 or D750. Also, superior color rendering performance ensures faithful reproduction of a subject’s color.

Supports the Nikon Creative Lighting System

Six CLS features out of seven are available: i-TTL mode, Advanced Wireless Lighting, Modeling flash, FV lock, Flash color information communication, Auto FP High-speed Sync. Wide-area AF Assist Illuminator is not supported. In Advanced Wireless Lighting, the SB-500 can be used as a master flash or remote flash using the camera’s built-in flash as a master.

Easy-to-understand operation

When attached to the D750, the SB-500 is automatically recognized and flash settings are enabled from the camera’s custom menu. Even commander mode can be set from the camera.

Compatible with readily available AA-size batteries

The SB-500 uses two AA-size alkaline or Ni-MH batteries which are available almost anywhere, so you’ll never run out of power.
